The Sanskrit name of this chakra is ajna, which means perceive and command. The third eye chakra is associated with our intuitive consciousness. This sixth chakra governs our mind, rational thought, insight and wisdom. It corresponds with spiritual revelations, wisdom and insightfulness.
This level of consciousness is associated with the Western notion of the subconscious mind that governs our actions in life. From the level of a clear third eye chakra we are intuitively aware of the motivations directing our actions. This chakra is associated with the carotid plexus, the nerves on either side of the face, and the pituitary gland.
Headaches in the temples or center of the forehead are associated with tensions in the third eye chakra. This chakra controls the pituitary gland and therefore the process of growth. It is also associated with extra sensory perception (ESP) and spirit-to-spirit communication. The element associated with this chakra is a vibration known as the inner sound; the internal sound that does not depend upon something in the physical world. In some Eastern traditions the ability to hear inner sound is considered a necessary prerequisite for spiritual growth. Excess energy in the third eye may be shown as overly cerebral behaviors. Deficient third eye energy may be displayed as deluded thought processes.
